I am tired of this administration being Nixon like and undemocratic!|||He made sure to reward those who contributed to his campaign.|||The deal that was struck in June was intended to secure big Pharma's support of the president's health care reform (or at least prevent their opposition to it). As it turns out, it appears the industry has committed $150 million in advertising in support of his plan. That's in addition to commitment to trim $80 billion in health care cost over the next ten years as part of the overhaul.
When one considers that much of the downfall of the Clinton health care initiative could be attributed to drug industry advertising opposing that plan, it's somewhat understandable that a deal seeking their support would make strategic sense, though what was given in exchange for such support remains shrouded in mystery. So that would explain why he would cut a deal with the industry.
As for the AIG bonuses, there were contracts in place assuring those bonuses if certain performance standards were met. Now, clearly, those performance standards were ill-conceived given what ended up happening to the company as a whole. Still, contract law is one of the pillars of our legal and economic systems, and dismissing a contract simply because of public outrage or political whimsy would shake the foundation of our system far more than even the recent financial crisis could have. So, legally, there was not much the president could do but try to shame the executives into returning those bonuses.|||What deal with "rich CEOs (no apostrophe please, this is the English language) at PHARMA".
And you do know that there's no organization called "PHARMA", right? I suspect you're referring to Big Pharma, the pharmaceutical companies, and you should actually be talking to the cons about that- Big Pharma is one of the entities disseminating the ridiculous "talking points" for the town Hall meetings. They have a vested interest in maintaining the staus quo of no regulation that their con lackeys have created for them.
**EDIT**
"Thomas D". are you loony? The "Astroturf" movement is all on the con side, with the "death panel" and care rationing and "socialism" propaganda. Nice try though.|||Obama has already been bought and paid for.
He has convinced Big Pharma to spend $155 Million for an Astroturf effort to get the health insurance plan passed.
EDIT: gilliegrrrl, you are an idiot. Here is a link for the source.
PhRMA鈥檚 participation is key, because the group has promised to kick in as much as $150 million for advertising and grass-roots activity to help pass the president鈥檚 plan.
